Greenwich Lib Dems call to "Axe the Tax"12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 29th Mar 2004
Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats have taken their campaign calling for Council Tax to be scrapped to the streets of the Borough, with thousands of leaflets delivered to homes across the area. The campaign highlights the unfairness of the current Council Tax system, where a pensioner living alone pays the same amount as a five person family living in the same sized house, and promotes the Local Income Tax which links a person's tax burden to their ability to pay as a fairer alternative. "Those on low incomes in Greenwich have been particularly badly hit," comments Greenwich & Lewisham GLA spokesman Alex Feakes, who joined the campaigners for their leafleting. "Many years of above inflation increases in Council Tax in this borough have meant that the charge has hit pensioners, for example, harder and harder each time." "The Lib Dem proposal for a Local Income Tax would see 70% of people paying less than they do now and would save at least £200m in administration costs across the country." More details about the Lib Dem campaign to scrap the Council Tax can be found at www.axethetax.org
