The Chancellor's £200 handout to pensioners has been criticised as a "figleaf" by Cllr Ian Gerrard, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Eltham.

"Whilst we welcome any help from pensioners, Gordon Brown has simply not done enough" said Cllr Gerrard. "This is just a one-off payment, which does nothing to change the unfairness of the council tax."

Cllr Gerrard continued, "Everyone knows that the only way to "axe the tax" is to vote Lib Dem. We are committed to abolishing the council tax and replacing it with a local income tax based on the ability to pay."

6 million pensioners would benefit from the Liberal Democrat proposals.
