Strong performance bodes well for future say Lib Dems10.00.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Thu 12th May 2005 The Liberal Democrats improved their position in all three parliamentary constituencies in Greenwich borough at the general election last week. Greenwich & Woolwich saw the greatest improvement, with our share of the vote increasing by 5.1%. Chris Le Breton achieved a swing of 8% from Labour and the Conservatives were pushed into third place. Cllr Ian Gerrard increased his share of the vote by nearly 4% in Eltham and recorded the party's best performance at a general election since 1987. Dr Steven Toole was the only one of the three main party candidates who saw his vote increase in Erith & Thamesmead. Local party chair Paul Gentry commented "When ex-Labour voters came to make a choice between the Liberal Democrats and Michael Howard's Conservatives, they overwhelmingly chose to support the positive approach put forward by the Lib Dems. "We look forward to building on this success at the local council elections next year by offering a fresh start to the people of Greenwich borough."
