Lib Dems vote against more pay for councillors

10.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 26th Sep 2002

The Liberal Democrat group on Greenwich Council last night voted against a massive 17% pay rise for councillors.

Although the Lib Dems voted against, pay rise was passed by Labour and Conservative councillors.

"The additional allowances approved have increased the total amount paid to councillors by £130,000 per year. This money to pay for this comes directly from council taxpayers' pockets" said Cllr Mark Pattenden (Eltham South).

"The Liberal Democrats have rejected this increase and we will not accept the extra money. Its a shame that other councillors like Rhodri Harris (Conservative, Blackheath Westcombe), who also voted against the proposal are so hypocritical that they will accept the money anyway. If he were seriously opposed to it, he would refuse the additional money like the Lib Dem councillors will" added Cllr Pattenden.
