Lib Dems protest as Labour cancels another council meeting

10.24.51pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sun 30th Oct 2005

Liberal Democrat councillors in Greenwich reacted angrily to the news that Wednesday's full council meeting has been cancelled because of "lack of business".

Cllr Mark Pattenden (Eltham South) said "It is ridiculous to claim that there was nothing to discuss."

"Members of the public and opposition councillors use these meetings to question the council leadership and present petitions on local issues. Some questions had already been submitted before the meeting was cancelled - so to say that there was no business is simply untrue."

The meeting was cancelled following discussions between the chief officers and the Labour-appointed Mayor. No opposition councillors were consulted before the announcement was made.

Cllr Pattenden concluded "Labour saw this an opportunity to avoid answering questions and this is not the first time that they have done this. It shows that Labour don't really care what the public think."
