Council should increase efficiency not rents, say Lib Dems

11.52.28pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sun 26th Feb 2006

Labour-run Greenwich Council should improve the efficiency of its housing service and recover its massive debts before putting up the rents for honest tenants who pay up on time, says Cllr Brian Woodcraft (Middle Park & Sutcliffe).

The Lib Dems voted against Labour's plan to raise council rents by 4.6% at the budget meeting this week.

"A recent report showed that Greenwich Council is owed more than £15million in uncollected rents. The council should concentrate on recovering this money before it increases the burden on those who already pay up," said Cllr Woodcraft.

The Conservatives voted in favour of the rent rise.
