Lib Dems back Green Dome plan5.04.31pm UTC (GMT +0000) Sat 3rd Feb 2007
Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats today called for a full consultation with local residents on the future redevelopment of the Millennium Dome site on Greenwich Peninsula following the announcement that the Dome would not be host to a massive 'super-casino.' Lib Dem Cllr Brian Woodcraft commented, "The Labour Council failed to consult local residents properly when the casino plans were put forward. Now that gamble has failed to come off we want to see local people fully involved in deciding the future of the site." "The original plan for the Dome was for a mixed-purpose development; a real, living community with homes and shops and facilities. The Lib Dem vision is to update that, but with a forward thinking green twist". The Lib Dem-backed plan centres around a World class Green Eco-Centre with a rolling exhibition of all the latest green technology and solutions, with a "Green Fair" offering display spaces rented by green manufacturers, and green entrepreneurs. The plan would provide quality jobs for the surrounding area, and fit in perfectly with the hotel and conference facilities being built on the Peninsula. Brian Woodcraft added, "The Dome could finally be seen as a forward thinking icon, with a legacy benefiting people in Greenwich, the UK and across the world. We will be consulting with local people to get their backing for our plans - an example we hope the Labour Council will follow."
