Blackwall Tunnel closure causes chaos across Greenwich

11.06.00pm UTC (GMT +0000) Tue 1st May 2007

Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats have criticised Transport for London over recent the withdrawal of the Blackwall Tunnel rush-hour tidal flow system.

Councillor Brian Woodcraft (Middle Park & Sutcliffe ward) commented:

"The scheme has been in operation for nearly 30 years. During the last three years only 6 of the 99 accidents in the Tunnel have been directly attributed to the tidal flow system. To abandon it, and to cause the massive congestion we have seen as a result, is a massive overreaction.

"To add insult to injury, Transport for London gave very little notice so local residents and Greenwich council had no time to prepare.

"Greenwich Borough Liberal Democrats have called on Transport for London to reinstate the tidal flow system and to reconsider what other measures can be taken to prevent accidents in the Tunnel."
